music and memory

lately i find myself being particularly nostalgic about music. it’s interesting how memory is so closely tied to song.

what do these songs make you think of?

1. sting- every breath you take
2. indigo girls – closer to fine
3. warrant – cherry pie (and don’t even try to say you don’t remember the song)
4. violent femmes – blister in the sun
5. depeche mode – personal jesus
6. they might be giants – istanbul
7. madonna – open your heart
8. dead milkmen – punk rock girl
9. nine inch nails – down in it
10. [insert your own song]

Oh dear Lord...

1) Being in middle school and wanting to be in love (even though I could have had NO concept of what that meant at the time).

2) Dancing at my first Indigo Girls concert with Betsy.

3) Feeling kind of tingly and kind of sleazy when I heard it but not REALLY understanding why (about 7th or 8th grade).

4) Dancing at the Edge in high school.

5) Being the angst ridden, anti-religious 17 year old that I was. (Don't worry; I still think it is a FABULOUS song)

6) Adam Crandall

7) Being in fourth or fifth grade at a slumber party where everyone sings (this is just the year before everyone decides they hate you for no good reason).

8) Singing with Betsy in the car. (but for the life of me I don't know why this is what i remember)

9) Steve. Breaking up with him. Realizing someone can crush your spirit. And understanding that I had been much better than I was at that point --AND IT WAS ALL HIS FAULT.

10) Lisa Loeb - Stay (some of you may not remember this... it's from the reality bites soundtrack).

Ok here is my debute...wish me luck!

1). Every girl I ever loved in middle school which by the way was every hot one EXCEPT (go figure), Playmate of the Year '05. Yeah you saw her Betsy. hea hea Did I just blow it at #1?

2). College...coming into my own away from home. And of course the fun that comes with that...

3). Arguing with my sophmore college roommate that it was my house and that she better turn that sh^t off when I was home. Please?

4). Oh god...every party I have ever been too. Love it. Most recently doing karoke at a friends after 32 drinks and 63 jello shots with a real guitar and of couse a friend who had 1 more jello shot then me. So I was the lead singer and she was backup.

5). First girlfriend in high school. She WAS my Personal Jesus when she would make it through my bedroom window without killing herself and not getting me caught by the parents. Meanwhile, I wonder what ever happened to her??? I wonder if she could still do it now that I'm on a second floor...hmm.

6). Ok...not for nothing...here it is 11:48pm and now I MUST have Chicken Korma or Tikka Masala. Great...now what?

7). Just Jelly bracelets and my refusal to do the shoes.

8). My sister. She was the Punk Rock Girl and looking at her now you would do nothing but laugh at the thought.

9). My deck at my house in the Timbers in Tallahassee and our stereo speakers (Klipsch). The parties that occurred with this song always on the Playlist. I think that disc was stolen 4 times from those parties.

10). Oh I remember it. hea hea For some reason it reminds me of playing frisbee in a park with an ex from FSU.

11). New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle...for me just dancing. On every compliation CD I made for YEARS.

Pout

P.S. Am I expected to do this on a daily basis now...cause I will if threatened properly? That was fun. Thanks.

Given that I was not allowed to listen to secular music as a child, I am going to try my best at this.

1. Watching TV commercials giving selling complation CDs of Slow Jams.

2. Singing and playing the guitar with Becky.

3. No idea. God doesn't like warrrant.

4. Riding to the beach with Rachel James and wearing no sunscreen.

5. Castle dancing

6. At the concert with Little Amy while she sang EVERY word to EVERY one of their songs.

7. Missy Baird the Madonna freak

8. Never heard of it.

9. God REALLY doesn't like NIN.

10. Alanis Morisette - You Outta Know

Boy did I rock out to that one singin' at the top of my lungs. Can't control me now Mom - I have my own car!!!!
